This Verse I copied from your article https://staging.herri.org.za/12/alice-patricia-meyer/. I now see you use spaces to make an indent per sentence. Of course this does not work when the sentence breaks to the next line on mobile. Forcing a layout with spaces is always tricky. This is why we added indent classes. They work here too, why don’t you use them?
When the sun recedes
into the Soutpansberg,
Giyani Block puts on
a black adder coat;
a mirror of death and despair.[1]Bila, “Giyani Block”, in In the name of Amandla, p. 7, ll.1-4.
This is the same but without spaces and class .indent1:

Giyani Block puts on
a black adder coat;
a mirror of death and despair.[2]Bila, “Giyani Block”, in In the name of Amandla, p. 7, ll.1-4.
